For Researchers

Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust supports high quality research within world class facilities and our specialist Research and Innovation team can help progress studies quickly and efficiently.

We work in collaboration with a variety of researchers to help deliver groundbreaking and innovative research.

We have a skilled Research Governance team who ensure that all research is complaint with regulations, follows Clinical Research Principles, has relevant approvals in place, and is of a high scientific standard. The team provides support throughout the research journey, from acting as sponsor (or co-sponsor) for certain studies, providing governance advice, providing local Trust Management Approval, to closing and archiving studies, and GCP compliant training. Ongoing oversight is maintained through the collection of recruitment figures, progress reports and oversight meetings.

Sponsorship

Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust may agree to act as the sole Sponsor or a Co-Sponsor with another organisation. Generally, the Trust will only act as a sponsor if the chief investigator is an employee.

The Chief Investigator must formally request Research and Innovation to act as a Sponsor and submit all relevant documents to the Research and Innovation Governance team.

Is a Sponsor required?

Research that falls under the remit of the Secretary of State for Health must have a formal Sponsor. This includes all health and social care research involving NHS patients, their tissue, or data.

What does a Sponsor do?

Study Sponsors take ultimate responsibility for the initiation, management, and financing (or arranging financing) of the research.
